Rap Sheet: Hip Hop and The Cops (2006) Documentary

Posted by smoker on October 13, 2009

As a long time Hip-Hop fan, as well as a documentary film buff, I was excited to get my copy of Rap Sheet: Hip Hop and The Cops from my Netflix queue. However, it doesn’t take long to realize the stupidity of most of the people involved in the film. Seriously. I was so in awe of this documentary, I felt I had to sit down with a fresh bowl of weed and watch it again, just so I could write this blog post about the morons featured in the film.

Basically, the film is about some “secret dossiers” that police, FBI, and task agencies have compiled on hip-hop performers and industry executives. Of course, this is frowned upon by the Hip Hop community.

The film starts with an interview of Lou Savelli, a former NYPD Sergeant, who explains that some of these rappers live their real life just like their rap songs, drugs, guns, fights at night clubs, etc.

Then we have Russell Simmons, in all his ignorance, says “they’re poets, they’re not gangstas, that’s obvious.” — First of all, Mr. Simmons, it is NOT obvious. Do you know what the word “obvious” means? He says that police should be “doing law enforcement” to deal with criminals instead of “poets.” Well, that would be nice Mr. Simmons, but some of your so-called poets are hardened criminals, whether you want to admit it or not.

Can we really blame our police for keeping files on a segment of the population that brags about being criminals?

The filmaker begins by explaining that when he was 20 years old, Tupac Shakur was gunned down, and when he turned 21, The Notorious B.I.G. was assasinated in retaliation for the Tupac shooting. A couple years later, Big L was murdered, and a couple years later, 50 Cent was shot many times. Also, about a “gun battle” outside of Hip-Hop radio station HOT 97 that sent L’il Kim to prison (although when released, she was able to go mainstream on Dancing With The Stars…lol).

Oh then months later, the filmaker points out, Sean “P Diddy” Combs was involved in another shooting that sent his moron protege Jamal “Shyne” Barrow to prison.

In 2002, the legendary Jam Master Jay was shot execution style IN HIS recording studio!

One of the focal points of this documentary is the Murder Inc trials of Irv Gotti and his friend Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff, who had been a drug kingpin in the late 1980s, and was responsible for $200,000 worth of drug deals per day.

So can we really be angry that there is a so-called “Hip Hop Police?” Hell no, it sounds to me like there needs to be someone keeping tabs on some of these idiots.

Anyway, I’m just going to kind of comment of some of the more ridiculous points in the movie, like now, when several rappers are being asked about the existance of “Hip Hop Cops” and some ‘tard calling himself “Sheist Bub” says “Ya got da hip hop cops out there, and they watching, they BE at the clubs, I see ‘em, cuz I be in the clubs

Then we have Ghostface Killah saying “Fuck the hip hop police, man, know wah mean? Mind yo fucking business, stop followin niggas, I feed babies all across Africa, nigga, know wah mean? And you put a label on me like that? You wanna follow me?

Holy shit Mr. Ghostface Killah, you just seemed dumb as all hell. First of all, what do you think is the police’s business? And it doesn’t fucking matter how many babies you feed all across Africa, if you involve yourself with a criminal element here in the United States. Secondly, why don’t you feed babies all across the United States?

I also find it funny that all these rappers claim they do “nothin but positive” — yeah right, me too buddy. This guy Dee Dean, CEO of Ruff Ryders, says how he’s been followed, pulled over, been arrested, been harassed and was “doing nothing but positive” — whatever the fuck that means.

So now the filmmaker is describing this 500-page “secret book” in which police keep files on rappers. However, he explains that he was able to obtain a copy of this so-called “secret book” in only 2 days. LOL. Some secret conspiracy, huh?

He explains that some of the biggest names in Hip Hop are included in the book, like Damon Dash, DMX, P Diddy, Li’l Kim, 50 Cent, Shyne, Nas, Irv Gotti, Ja Rule, Kenneth Supreme McGriff, and Foxie Brown, and shows the stars mug shots, along with their past criminal history.

As Busta Rhymes is being shown the book, he says “Oh yall got my mug shot over here? Oh shit, this shit is crazy!”

Doug E. Fresh says “It’s disrespectful, know what I’m sayin?” YES Doug, we know what the word disrespectful means. Know what I’m sayin?

Now some guy named Mike Taylor, described as a former NYPD Officer is looking at the book saying “scares the hell out of me, cuz they’re just targeting a group of blacks without any reason for them to be targeted, who’s next?”

Ummm, nice, so now Mike Taylor thinks it’s just about racial issues? LOL, and he thinks they’re being targeted for no reason? HOW ABOUT BECAUSE of their real-life criminal backgrounds and real-life criminal acquaintances, along with their ridiculous song lyrics?

It is not racial, if a group consists of a criminal element, there might be a book on it. There are files kept about Mafia families, and everyone in the book is Italian or white, is that racist?

Oh here’s another positive guy, rapper Guru from Gangstarr, says “I’m on some positive shit, I’m tryin to elevate some minds, but you wanna profile me.” Ok, do you even know what profile means?

Layzie Bone holds up the book and says “this some bullshit, it seem like you wanna set us up to do bad, but we ONLY doin’ good.” Yeah, I believe that. I distinctly remember Layzie Bone doing a song with his son, who was like 6 years old, let me post some of the lyrics to that song real quick, as rapped by the 6 year old:

Wanna ride wanna die?
Let’s get high
Nigga we kicking your door down
Blasting you with shot guns
What you wanna do
Nigga, we kicking your door down
Nigga, what you wanna do
We got that AK 47
Nigga you better heat the heaven
We gonna get tore up
Blast down nigga
What you wanna do
Nigga i got that AK 47
I got technine’s and all that
Nigga what you wanna do and
Mo Thug’s we don’t play around with you
Me and my daddy we in the backyard
Niggas looking at us trying too be hard

Oh yeah Mr. Layzie Bone, “only doing good”…that sounds great for a 6 year old to be rapping about. YOU FUCKING MORON. Don’t anyone give me this shit about it being “poetry” either, this isn’t a movie, this is a kid singing about blasting people away with shotguns. A kid that age shouldn’t even be allowed to watch a movie like Scarface, and much less writing songs about kiling people as his father approves.

Anyway, back to this “secret” book (that the filmmaker obtained so easily), it really appears as though it mostly contains the criminal records and mugshots of many artists. You know what? If you don’t want to cops to have a copy of your criminal record, DON’T HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD.

This kind of shit just doesn’t happen in country music, or classical music, and hardly even in heavy metal music…so what is the fucking problem with Hip Hop, that some of its biggest stars have been MURDERED?

You morons keep with your “Stop Snitching” bullshit.

Some of the people interviewed keep mentioning how these rappers are “multi-millionaires”, as if that makes them decent human beings.

RIP Proof, 1973-2006, shot dead outside a club after he already shot & killed another club goer.

Did I really just see on CNN that the moron who calls himself “Soulja Boy Tellem” was just arrested for RUNNING FROM THE COPS? What the FUCK is wrong with the hip-hop industry?

Wyclef Jean, what a piece of work this guy is. I would wager his IQ is well below average. Ok, he argues for hip hop by mentioning the violent Johnny Cash song Delia’s Gone. Yeah, everybody likes to point that song out when they’re trying to defend rap violence. However, this idiot Wyclef says quote “Country music is WAY more violent than Hip Hop.” ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME, WYCLEF? Come on now, I didn’t think you were that stupid.

Stanley Crouch moade more sense than anyone else on the DVD. You can’t make an entire career out of bragging about being a gangster and dope dealer, without expecting the cops to watch you.

Busta Rhymes is interviewed in a segment, where he is literally talking out the side of his mouth, telling a story about being in some town where the cops told him they were going to follow him around for his protection. He explains how he gave the cops a hard time, and planned to take them on a pointless chase around the city.

L’il Kim…what a joke, this freak was actually on Dancing With The Stars! Oh, she was also in PRISON before that for lying under oath about a shooting.

Israel Ramirez, Busta Rhyme’s bodyguard, was shot dead outside of a VIDEO SHOOT on February 5, 2006…maybe that bodyguard would have liked a police presence? Way to go, Busta, you fucking idiot.

The film closes by informing us that Busta Rhymes was arrested after a concert in NYC, on August 19 of 2006 on charges of ASSAULT and criminal possession of a weapon. LOL. Way to go, violence. Did I already say that Busta Rhymes is a fucking idiot?

“It was reported that the police used the arrest as an opportunity to question Rhymes about the unsolved murder of his bodyguard, Israel Ramirez.”

BIG FUCKING DEAL, I would HOPE the police used the opportunity to question someone about an unsolved murder. Why wouldn’t they? Does Busta not want the crime to be solved?
